Gym Defense: Best Defenders Ranked
AdminJuly 8, 2026228 views
Building the perfect gym defense keeps your Pokemon out long enough to get your 50 coins. Here's the ranking of defenders and why.
Defender Rankings
| Rank | Pokemon | Why It Works | CP Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Blissey | Highest HP in game, takes forever to beat | 2700-3200 |
| A | Chansey | Even tankier than Blissey but lower CP decay | 1100-1500 |
| A | Snorlax | Good HP, decent attack, accessible | 2800-3300 |
| B | Slaking | High CP deters attackers but easy to beat | 4000+ |
| B | Metagross | Steel type resists 10 types | 3500-3900 |
| C | Dragonite | Good attack but fast to beat | 3500-4000 |
Optimal Gym Setup
- Slot 1: Blissey or Chansey (gatekeeper -- makes people quit)
- Slot 2: Snorlax or Metagross (tanky follow-up)
- Slot 3: Your flex pick (Slaking for CP scare, or a regional)
- Golden Razz the Blissey only -- save berries for the gatekeeper
Feeding Strategy
- Regular Razz: only if Pokemon is below 50% motivation
- Golden Razz: use max 10 per gym per 30 minutes
- Nanab: useless for defense (save for catching)
- Pinap: also useless for defense
- Best times to feed: 11:45 PM (hold gym overnight for morning coins)
SEA gym meta: In high-density areas like Jakarta and Manila, turnover is every 2-3 hours. Don't expect to hold a gym for 8 hours unless it's in a remote area. The strategy is to drop in gyms at 10 PM -- you'll likely hold through the night and collect your 50 coins the next morning. Battle gyms in groups of 3+ to get through Blissey stacks faster.
